How to Store 3D Printing Filament in Bangalore's Humidity
Store filament sealed in an airtight box with desiccant, keep humidity below about 30%, and dry any spool that pops, strings or looks rough. This matters most in the monsoon.
Why humidity ruins prints
Most filaments absorb moisture from the air. When a damp spool is heated in the nozzle, the water turns to steam. That causes popping or hissing, stringing, bubbles, rough surfaces and weaker, more brittle parts. Bangalore is mild for most of the year, but the monsoon months (roughly June to September) bring high humidity, so an open spool can go bad faster than you expect.
Signs your filament is wet
- Popping, crackling or hissing sounds at the nozzle
- Heavy stringing and blobs that settings do not fix
- Rough, fuzzy or matte surfaces that should be smooth
- Brittle filament that snaps when bent, and weak layer bonding
How sensitive is each filament?
| Filament | Moisture sensitivity (typical) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PLA / PLA+ | Moderate | Prints badly when damp but dries easily |
| ABS | Low to moderate | Still dry it if the surface turns rough |
| PETG | High | Strings heavily and loses strength when damp |
| TPU | High | Soft filament that bubbles easily; store it very dry |
How to store filament
- Keep spools in an airtight box or zip bag with silica gel or other desiccant
- Add a small hygrometer and aim for humidity below about 30%
- Put spools back in storage after each print, especially in the monsoon
- Keep boxes away from direct sun, bathrooms and kitchens
- For PETG and TPU, print from a dry box when you can
How to dry filament
| Filament | Typical drying temperature | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| PLA / PLA+ | 45–55 °C | 4–6 hours |
| PETG | 60–65 °C | 4–6 hours |
| ABS | 65–80 °C | 4–6 hours |
| TPU | 45–55 °C | 4–6 hours |
Typical guidance only. Check the label on your spool, and do not exceed the temperature at which the spool itself softens. Use a filament dryer or a food dehydrator rather than a kitchen oven.
Which filament to choose if humidity worries you
PLA+ is the most forgiving everyday choice, and ABS is less sensitive than PETG or TPU. If you need PETG or TPU, buy fresh spools and store them dry from day one.
Frequently asked questions
Does PLA absorb moisture?
Yes, but less than PETG or TPU. Damp PLA often shows stringing and a rough surface, and it recovers well when dried.
How long can a spool stay out in Bangalore?
It depends on the season and the filament. Spools can degrade within days to weeks in humid weather, so seal them after printing, especially PETG and TPU.
Can I dry filament in a kitchen oven?
It is not recommended, because oven temperatures are inaccurate at low settings and can deform the spool. A filament dryer or food dehydrator is safer.
